Folk rock artist Richard Thompson launches a new album of new music, recorded and performed in front of a live audience. The talented musician and writer is joined by four equally talented players, as he runs through 13 new songs, ranging from the angry, rock guitar infused opener ‘The Money Shuffle’ aimed at Banker’s who ruined the system, to ‘A Brother Slips away’, in homage to the many friends that the 61 year old lost along the way.
With ‘Dream Attic’ the concept of recording a live album of completely new recordings so it holds the fresh excitement of a new studio record but with a live atmosphere, is perhaps a reflection of the current state of the music industry where the live experience is increasingly becoming the main source of income for labels and musicians alike. The applauding crowd seem to enjoy the new songs even though they are being exposed to it for the first time and to have such raw fresh appeal is enticing to the listener at home.
In man ways live albums is not a new concept, you just have to look at the number of live recordings produced by Elvis and many other to see that. But it is refreshing to have the concept revived in the modern era.
