Background

Leona Lewis won the third series of the UK TV show The X Factor in 2006. Leona was born in Stoke Newington in London and at the age of twelve wrote her first song. Before entering the X Factor competition, she wrote and recorded a number of songs which were never released. At her audition she stunned the judges with a brilliant performance of the song  Over The Rainbow. After the competition, Simon Cowell took her to America to being work on her first album Spirit. The album became a major success reaching number one in the UK, Ireland, USA and a number of other countries around the world. Her debut single A Moment Like This, broke the record for the largest number of downloads in a thirty minutes time slot ever achieved on the internet, while her second single Bleeding Love, written by Ryan Tedder and Jessey McCarthy was the biggest selling single in the UK in 2007. It later went to number one in France and the United States.

Brit Award Nomination 2008
January 2008

Leona was nominated in four categories at this years Brit awards. The categories are:

British Female Solo Artist, 
British Breakthrough Act,
British Album for Spirit,
British Single for "Bleeding Love. 

Despite being favourite to win in each category, she came away with nothing.

Leona tops the charts with Bleeding Love
February 2008 

Leona became the first British female act to top the American charts with her single “Bleeding Love” for over 20 years. Leon is also only the third British female artist to top the charts in the US with her debut single. 

Leona Joins Sport Relief 
March 2008 

This month Leona joins the Sports Relief effort to raise money for charity. She release the double A-side single “Better in Time” and “Footprints in the Sand” and donated the proceeds to the charity.

Leona visit American Idol
April 2008

Leona made a guest appearance on American idol where she performed her chart topping hit “Bleeding Love”.

Nelson Mandela’s Birthday Concert
June 2008

Leona performed hits from her Spirit album at Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday celebration concert in Hyde Park, London. She also won an award in Malaysia for the best breakthrough artist.

Goodwill Ambassador
July 2008

At a nomination ceremony in Japan, Leona was named Goodwill Ambassador for UK-Japan 2008. Leona said she was honoured to become a Goodwill Ambassador for UK-Japan 2008. Leona recently visited Japan for the first time and  said she loved it and was looking forward to exploring such an amazing country as well as to support UK-Japan 2008.
