David Archuleta started singing at a very young age
and won a number of children singing competitions in his home state of
Utah. He made his first appearance on television at the age of eleven
when he sang on The Jenny Jones Show.
He also had the opportunity to sing for Kelly Clarkson and Justin
Guarini in Idol season one.
David was born in Miami Florida and grew up in a musical family. His
mother was a singer and his father was a jazz musician. At the age of
six his family relocated to Utah and it was there that David’s musical
interest started to grow. He was inspired by musicals such as ‘Evita’
and ‘Les Miserables’ and would sing along while watching the videos.
David’s inspiration for wanting to sing popular music came as a result
of the first season of American Idol. While watching at home he was
impressed by performances by Kelly Clarkson and Tamyra Gray. This led
David to audition for other talent shows years before auditioning for
American Idol; he appeared on both ‘The Jenny Jones Show’ and ‘Star
Search’.
While on ‘Star Search’, David discovered that there was something wrong
with his voice. He was later diagnosed by a doctor of having vocal
paralysis. It took several years of therapy before David recovered from
this and during that time it was never certain if he would be able to
sing again. Thankfully David recovered well enough to audition for
American Idol in summer 2007 and finished the competition in second
place.
